Uses of cellular technologies in IOT based networks

The cellular communication technologies have increased its growth since 1980. The telecommunications market segment is increasing very rapidly, and will continue to globalize the radio access technologies. The next paradigm in the communication technologies is the internet of things (IOT) that tends to connect every communication device including sensors and smart tags. Many industrial IOT applications are appearing such as industrial lighting, smart agriculture and logistic control. Such kind of application needs to connect a huge number of devices to work different latency, power and small price, that could be possible only using internet of things. Internet of things provides sensing and remote controlling of objects that allows direct integration between physical and digital world resulting in accuracy and improved efficiency. Some real world uses of the IOT in the communication domain are specified below.

Smart Cities

Smart cities are one of the powerful applications of IOT that manages transport, water and energy management, security and environmental monitoring. Smart cities mean to improve the life standard of the residents by building infrastructure to continuously improve the efficiency and economic growth. Smartness of a city means to incorporate the technology in many applications such as the smart parking, that will help drivers to locate parking quickly and avoid lengthy searches. An internet of things project called Flex Net communication has been implemented to save water usage by an order of 23%. Smart city infrastructure also provides more efficient trash management system, that helps ensure a healthy atmosphere.

Environmental management

In the future IOT will have a huge impact on the environmental management to water energy and other recourses. Both the positive and negative impacts of the environments are determined by the big data analysis through air and water monitoring systems. The environmental damages that occur due to earth quack, floods, hurricanes can be onitored by the IOT equipped hardwires. The smart environmental system also keeps track of the drainage system by controlling the devices’ behavior through the cellular networks. This system makes use of sensor technology to access the polluted, inaccessible or uninhabitable places, without risking the health of the workers.

Connected cars 

Internet of things is revolutionizing the traditional cars by introducing a new concept of connectivity. Cars in the next few years will become safer and will be in touch with its surroundings at every time. Due to the use of IOT vehicles will be connected inside and outside to weather, location and traffic. Using cellular connectivity and sensors the connected cars will
be able to optimize and maintain its own operation and maintenance. Companies working on connected car concepts, provides a plug and play IOT component that is capable of smooth integration of different parts of the vehicle and also with the outside environment.

IOT in agriculture

Due to the increasing demand of connected devices, IOT also find its application in the improvement of agriculture sector. IOT technologies will help farmers to increase productivity and reduce the waste produced by the use of smart forming techniques. The forming will become more accurate and controlled by the use of smart sensors, control hardware, and
autonomous vehicles. IOT in agriculture will allow the farmers to collect information about both the weather and plants and to integrate them in a cloud to get real time information about the health of the farms. Weather sensors used in smart farms predicts the climate changes and protects the plants health by providing protective measures.

Smart Grids

Internet of things tends to connect several devices to each other; the idea can also be implemented in smart grids applications. Smart grid is an IOT technology to improve life style and reduce green house gasses emission by the use of smart sensors and cellular wireless technologies. Smart grids improve the performance of smart loads, smart automotive and hardware which is an integral first step to enable smart cities. This technology helps increase energy efficiency by the integration of new technology and two-way access between the consumers and the data servers. For power monitoring and controlling sensors and monitoring devices are installed at the distribution centres and consumer premises that allows real time
monitoring. Smart grid technology integrates the network utilities; thus, three different networks are not required anymore; all the networks will share the same IP based network to provide services to various applications. Therefore, utilities will become less expensive, more efficient
and will be able to make better business models.
